U-say Effective August 29, 2026

Privacy Policy

What U-say collects, where it goes, and what you can delete.

1. Who we are

U-say is a language-learning app that builds lessons from the language you actually use. This policy explains what we collect, where it goes, and what you can delete. U-say is currently in beta.

2. What stays on your device

Most of what you create never leaves your phone. Your phrases, lesson history, review schedule, streak, progress and settings are stored locally on your device and are tied to your account. We do not keep a copy of your learning history on our servers.

3. What we store on our servers

Your account (email address and encrypted password) is stored by Supabase, our hosting and authentication provider. We also keep a daily count of how many times each account uses the AI features, so we can enforce fair-use limits and prevent abuse. That counter records the number of requests and the date — not what you said, wrote or heard.

4. What we send to AI providers

Some features send your content to third-party services to be processed. These providers act on our instructions and, under their business terms, do not use this content to train their models.\n\n• Anthropic (Claude) — receives text you type or say for translation, conversation replies, lesson generation and dictionary lookups.\n• Groq — receives voice recordings you make, in order to transcribe them into text.\n• ElevenLabs — receives target-language sentences, in order to speak them aloud.\n• Supabase — hosts our servers, database and account system.\n\nOur servers pass this content straight through to the provider and do not store it.

5. Voice recordings

The microphone is used only when you start a recording or a conversation, and the app shows you while it is active. Recordings are sent to Groq to be turned into text.\n\nBy default, U-say does not keep the raw audio after transcription — you can change this in Privacy & Data, where you can also turn off storing transcripts and conversation history.

6. Screenshots and images

If you choose to import a screenshot, it is sent to Anthropic to identify useful phrases in it. By default the image itself is not retained after it has been read.

7. Guest accounts

You can try U-say without giving an email address. A guest account is anonymous — we hold no email or name for it — and everything you learn is stored on your device. If you delete the app or lose the device, a guest account and its progress cannot be recovered, because there is nothing identifying it to restore.

8. Deleting your data

In Settings you can delete individual captures, conversations, remembered context, personal phrases or all local data.\n\nYou can also delete your entire account from Settings → Account → Delete account. That permanently removes your account and everything attached to it, and cannot be undone.

9. Exporting your data

Settings → Privacy & Data can produce a JSON file containing your profile, settings, phrases, progress and conversation history. Once you share that file, it is outside the app — keep it somewhere you trust.

10. Permissions we ask for

Microphone, for features you start yourself. Photo library, only when you pick a screenshot to import. Notifications, only if you turn on practice reminders. You can change all of these in your device settings, and U-say keeps working without them, with the related features unavailable.

11. Children

U-say is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. The age you give during onboarding is used to adjust conversation topics. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

12. Security

Your connection to our servers is encrypted, your password is never stored in readable form, and database access is restricted so an account can only ever read its own rows. AI provider keys are held on our servers and are never included in the app. No system is perfectly secure, and we will tell affected users promptly if we learn of a breach.

13. Where your data is processed

Our providers operate in the United States and other countries, so your information may be processed outside where you live. If you are in the UK, EU or another region with data-protection rights, you can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data by contacting us — or delete your account yourself at any time.

14. Changes to this policy

This policy is effective August 29, 2026. If we make a material change — particularly adding a new provider that receives your content — we will update this page and tell you in the app before it takes effect.

15. Contact
